Tron Identity: A Fun Visual Novel That's Too Short

Tron Identity: A Fun Visual Novel That's Too Short

The Good:

Tron Identity is a unique noir-style crime investigation game that takes place in the Tron universe. It's a soft-sequel to Tron Legacy in the sense that it takes place sometime after the events of the current movies. Possibly as a prelude to the new Tron movie coming out sometime soon, Tron: Ares.

What makes this game so fun is that the dialogue is crisp and grounded in realism. The conversations truly captures that Tron itch I've been longing for so many years. Not to mention the art-style is nothing short of amazing! It even has some nice lore tid-bits through the in-game codex system.

Overall the story itself is rather good and it even has twists and turns for certain characters that you need to watch out for. My playthrough I only ever killed one person and they were kind of asking for it to be honest. Once you figure out the end game of the story and realize what actually caused the disaster in the game to happen, you'll be both excited to have figured it out though it is scripted to always have you figure it out the same exact way and it's a bit boring in that regard. Especially if you plan on doing multiple playthroughs for the branching storylines.

The Bad:

The defragment mini-game was lackluster at best, downright terrible at worse. It's essentially a matching game similar to Rummikub but manages to make itself too simplistic and yet too complex for its own good. It's a basic design but with a lot of complexities that makes it not so fun to play. Luckily you can skip the mini-game altogether and still get most of the achievements associated with the mini-game, outside a few that require you to do bonus objectives involving the mini-game. Overall it's not the worst thing about the game but it's not good either. It's as the gen z's would say, very mid.

The Ugly:

The most atrocious thing of al is the fact the game isn't longer. Seriously one playthrough is only around 3 hours on average. Compare that to other visual novels that can take you upwards of 6-10 hours to complete a single playthrough and you'll start wishing there was more to complete. Besides the game being rather short I think it's ridiculous to tie achievements behind their defrag mini-game when the mini-game is poorly made. It feels like it's trying to add artificial longevity to the game.

The Verdict:

Even with all the cons the game does unfortunately have I can recommend the game as the story is quite good, fun and engaging. I just wish there was more to experience.
