The Witcher 3 Next Gen Update Is Out And Has It's Issues

The Witcher 3 next gen update has finally been released for a few days now and so far the reception seems to have been mixed. Quite a substantial amount of players have been reporting major issues with the performance of the game. It's appears to be mostly reported on the PC port where players with various computer specifications are reporting poor framerates, frametimes and stuttering/hitches within their gameplay. One player even stated:

"I know it's free and all. But CPU Usage - 60 Percent GPU Usage - 70 Percent FPS - 39? Please fix this nonsense. Enough with the excuses. It is not like it needed updating, but since you hyped us up, how can we go back?"

Whilst it's normal for new game launches and game updates to have issues on release. This is CDProjektRed's next major release since Cyberpunk 2077 and as we all know it faced a lot of backlash on it's release for releasing in a broken state. So much so that Sony unreleased the game on their PlayStation 4 platform as it was nearly unable to be completed due to various performance issues and bugs. Now with The Witcher 3's Next Gen Update it seems to be getting the same treatment but this time on the reverse side of things. Where as before the game was unplayable for many players on the last gen of consoles. Now it's seemingly unplayable for most PC players. That said it's been rather mixed on its reception as some players have stated they aren't facing performance issues. Leading to the main issue with the update being inconsistent.

Fortunately, CDProjektRed Isn't Giving Up That Easily

With all of the reports being sent in CDProjektRed has responded to the issues being reported on their @WitcherGame twitter account and stated a hotfix was released today

(12/19/22) alongside their Origin release which is being rebranded as the "EA App". I am happy to see that CDProjektRed has refused to back down from their game even when faced with backlash. It seems they're trying their hardest to fix the games update and that's all we can hope for in these recent years where plentiful of studios are releasing "half-baked" games instead of delaying them to polish their games more.

What You Can Do

There's also a part you can play when trying to remedy these issues in the meantime until they are properly patched out. For now you can update your graphics drivers for Nvidia and AMD to help with poor performance on the latest update. Additionally for Steam and GOG users you can rollback the update from 4.0 back to 1.32 to alleviate the issues at the cost of the latest features present in the new update. I will continue to update my article as time goes on with any new information. You can also report any bugs you've experienced here.

  How The New Update Feels

I have finally had some time to kick back and try out the new update and while the performance feels a little nicer and the framerates are a bit more consistent I am still faced with that horrible sense of dread that is poor frametimes and hitching. It's better overall but still needs a ton more work. For those wondering I play video games on a Ryzen 5 5600X and RTX 3060TI. Without Raytracing and DLSS set to Quality, on Ultra+ settings, I'm able to achieve framerates of 80 on average in densely crowded areas where as in crowded areas I achieve 60fps but with major hitching. It's evident we need more than just a hotfix to even out the performance a bit more.

Hotfix #2 Is Now Out

Just as you've come to learn from CDProjektRed, they almost never give up on their games. In this case they released a second hotfix while in they work on the bigger patch likely releasing next year. They said this on their Steam page. Apart from that The Middleman's Opinion wishes you a happy holidays!
